FIELD: petroleum processing. SUBSTANCE: residual petroleum products are processed via viscosity breaking in presence of active molybdenum-containing complex prepared in the process of atmospheric or vacuum petroleum distillation. In particular, Mo(VI) containing molybdenic acid salts and polymolybdates used in amounts 0.001 to 1.0%. Molybdenum compound is introduced by dispersing solution of water- or oil-soluble molybdenum salt in suitable solvent, in initial oil or in stripped oil. Dispersing is carried out until stable emulsion with drop diameter 0.5 to 5.0 mcm is attained, whereupon petroleum is normally distilled and subjected to viscosity breaking. With such additive, viscosity of viscosity breaking residue falls from 59.5 to 15 units, freezing temperature from 17.0 to 5.0 C, and sulfur level from 1.3 to 0.5 wt %.
