FIELD: ferrous metallurgy; production of steel in steel-making units, open-hearth furnaces, for example. SUBSTANCE: proposed method includes loading charge, heating it, pouring molten iron and blowing metal bath with oxygen through tuyere. After blowing the bath with oxygen, tuyeres are placed to depth of 0.2-0.4 of height of metal and slag and neutral gas is fed at flow rate of 0.15-0.80 cu m per ton of steel at duration of blowing of 5 to 25 min. Blowing with neutral gas is terminated 0 to 1 minute before beginning of deoxidation of bath or after ? of metal has been tapped from unit. Nitrogen is used as neutral gas. EFFECT: reduction of oxidation of metal and melting losses. 2 cl, 3 tbl
