FIELD: petroleum processing and petrochemistry. SUBSTANCE: bitumen is obtained by oxidation of oil residues in presence of catalyst, more particularly shale and/or coal, zeolite/shale mix, or zeolite/coal mix in the form of dust in amount 5 to 60% of the weight of raw material. Naturally occurring and synthetic zeolite can also be used. In one embodiment of invention, exhausted zeolite- containing catalysts from petroleum refining processes can be used as zeolite. EFFECT: simplified process due to use of accessible catalyst and excluded catalyst preparation stages. 3 cl, 5 ex
