FIELD: water treatment. SUBSTANCE: invention concerns treatment of laundry and drinking water and may also find use in cleaning of natural (underground and surface) and waste waters from manganese and/or iron. Method involves passing water through filter charge, which is manganese ore (psilomelan) functioning simultaneously as catalyst for oxidation of both manganese and/or iron into sparingly soluble oxides. EFFECT: achieved reliable water treatment quality within permissible limiting concentrations of impurities due to elimination of liming operation and more economical filter charge washing conditions. 3 tbl, 3 ex
