FIELD: nonferrous metallurgy. SUBSTANCE: the invention is dealt with a field of a nonferrous metallurgy, in particular with a metallurgical method of smelting of copper and copper alloys. The method includes a smelting-down of a charge in a furnace with a cover, delivery to the surface of a permanently agitated melt of gaseous oxidizing agent and the following reduction of the melt. At that in the capacity of a gaseous oxidizing agent they use the water steam fed through a lance with a speed of 1-2 m qu / h, ensuring consumption of the water steam of 4- 6 m qu per a ton of a melt. In a specific case of realizations of the invention the water steam is fed through a lance spaced by no more than 30-50 mm from a surface of the melt. It is possible to screen the surface of the furnace cover from the direction of the melt with blacklead, asbestos or a coal powder. The invention provides an increase of the melt purification from impurities, simplification and price reduction of the process.
