FIELD: refractory materials. SUBSTANCE: mullite material obtained by exothermic synthesis technique and corresponding to formula 3Al2O3•3SiO2, contains, as silicon dioxide, 40:60 mixture of non-ground quartz sand and industrially manufactured dust ground quartz so that material contains, wt %: non-ground quartz sand 22-26, dust ground quartz 33-39, aluminum 25-30, clay 6-8, and alumina 4-7. Use of polydispersed mixture of sands as silicon dioxide provides for obtainment of required density, structure homogeneity, and stability in properties. Above proportion of components in staring charge ensures, after exothermic synthesis, achievement of 68-74% mullite content in resulting refractory material.
