FIELD: mechanical engineering; mechanisms for conversion of backward motion into rotary motion; muscle force drives, in bicycles for example. SUBSTANCE: proposed rack-and-gear drive includes strut, drive member, driven gear wheel and intermediate member (rack) provided with toothed rim on one end and flat on opposite end. Rack is articulated to its drive forming arm between tangential and initial lines and axis of articulation connecting the rack with its drive. Articulation is provided with braking unit and strut is provided with stop for engagement with smooth side of rack and limitation of clearance between rack and wheel during reverse stroke of rack. Stop may be made in form of roller articulated on wall and drive of rack may be made in form of swinging member whose axis of turn is so located that swinging member and arm of rack form acute angle.
