FIELD: industrial organic synthesis.

SUBSTANCE: method resides in adding organic solvent to mixture of substances to be separated in order to dissolve polyatomic alcohol, crystallization of sodium or calcium formate, separation of sodium or calcium formate from solution of polyatomic alcohol in above-mentioned organic solvent, for instance by filtration, and recycling of organic solvent followed by cooling of solution and crystallization of polyatomic alcohol, said organic solvent being of aromatic-series solvent, e.g. toluene, whereas, after addition thereof to the mixture of substances to be separated, the latter is heated to boiling temperature and, while maintaining mixture at this temperature, the mixture is dewatered by distilling off water and recycling organic solvent separated from water and simultaneously sodium or calcium formate non dissolved in organic solvent is crystallized and polyatomic alcohol is dissolved in organic solvent.

EFFECT: increased yield of well purified desired products and simplified more reliable separation installation.
