CONICALLY SCANNING ANTENNA (ALTERNATIVES) Russian patent published in 2004 - IPC

Abstract RU 2236727 C1

FIELD: radio engineering; primarily ultrahigh and extremely-high frequency bands; passive and active systems for automatic object tracking in angular data.

SUBSTANCE: proposed microwave antenna has parabolic mirror, antenna feed in the form of horn, and phase shifter made of radio transparent dielectric material and installed between feed and parabolic mirror; this phase shifter is made in the form of hemisphere facing feed with its concave end and has at least five different-thickness effective sections and two ineffective sections forming hemisphere base and joined with cylindrical supporting member set in rotary motion together with hemisphere about feed axis by means of gear motor. Sections are joined together through their side faces formed upon dissecting hemisphere with meridian surfaces running at desired angle to feed axis; their thicknesses are found by calculations from proposed formula. Antenna of alternative design has its effective dielectric section of minimal thickness replaced by thin radio transparent water- and dust-tight film, 0.1 to 0.15 mm thick, that does not bring noticeable phase shift in film-crossing spherical wave. Horn is not revolving and does not need rotary joint; dispensing with subdish eliminates signal loss due to depolarization across the latter and reduces blockage of parabolic mirror compared with antennas using subdish.

EFFECT: enhanced frequency band, eliminated signal loss, reduced blockage of parabolic mirror.
