CATHODE UNIT FOR ALUMINUM ELECTROLYZER Russian patent published in 2004 - IPC

FIELD: non-ferrous metallurgy; electrolytic production of aluminum; construction of cathode unit of aluminum electrolyzer.

SUBSTANCE: proposed cathode unit has casing, hearth blocks with cathode rods, lining under hearth blocks, lining located between hearth blocks and walls of casing, lining consisting of two parts; upper part of this lining is made from plates of non-metallic high-melting compounds located along walls of casing; peripheral seam rises towards side lining. Lower part of side lining is made from heat-insulating elements located over perimeter of casing on lining located in space between hearth blocks and walls of casing. Joint areas of plates of upper part of side lining and heat-insulating elements of its lower part are located at height equal to 0.5-1.1 of height of hearth block. Peripheral seam is made at rise to height sufficient for overlapping the joint areas of plates of upper part and heat-insulating elements of lower part of side lining. Tightly fitted to plates of upper part of side lining and heat-insulating elements of its lower part are insertion blocks made from carbon-containing materials or from non-metallic high-melting materials which are connected with them by means of adhesive or cementing materials.
