FIELD: metal working, namely processes for applying wear resistant multi-layer coatings onto cutting tools.
SUBSTANCE: method comprises steps of vacuum-plasma deposition of coating layers. According to invention are applied: lower layer of titanium compound and metal alloyed with aluminum; upper layer of titanium nitride or carbonitride and metal; intermediate layer of upper layer material alloyed with aluminum. Silicon, chrome, molybdenum or zirconium is used as metal. Layers of coatings are applied by means of three built-up cathodes arranged horizontally in the same plane. Two cathodes are arranged mutually opposite and they are made of titanium and used metal, third cathode is made of titanium and aluminum.
EFFECT: increased adhesion and cohesion strength of layers with base material, enhanced effectiveness of cutting tool with such coating.
