METHOD FOR MAKING BIMETALLIC ROLLING ROLLS IN GAS-SHIELD ATMOSPHERE Russian patent published in 2006 - IPC B22D19/16 

FIELD: electric-slag casting of cylindrical bimetallic articles such as rolling rolls with cast iron jacket.

SUBSTANCE: method comprises steps of applying onto inner surface of bandage serving as chill mold layer of alkali and alkali-earth metal chlorides and fluorides; mounting electrode in the form of powder wire; filling cavity of electrode with alkali and alkali-earth metal chlorides and fluorides; closing gap between bandage and roll arbor with lid having hole and creating liquid slag bath in it; supplying melt cast iron to gap through hole of lid. In the result of electric slag casting process, electrode melts, chlorine- and fluorine-containing compounds evaporate and gas-shield atmosphere is formed. At surfacing rigid layer of roll is protected against secondary oxidation and cast iron is chilled due to saturation of metal with chlorine and fluorine containing compounds.

EFFECT: improved quality of rolls.
