SUBSTANCE: invention relates to an azulene derivative of the formula (I): or its salt wherein each radical among R1-R4 represents hydrogen atom, (lower alkylene)-O-(lower alkyl), -C(=O)-(optionally substituted lower alkyl) or (optionally substituted lower alkylene)-(optionally substituted aryl); each radical among R5-R12 represents hydrogen atom, optionally substituted lower alkyl, halogen atom, (alkylene)-O-optionally substituted lower alkyl), -O-(optionally substituted lower alkylene)-(optionally substituted aryl), -COOH or -C(=O)-O-(optionally substituted lower alkyl); A represents a bond or optionally substituted lower alkylene wherein -A- can be bound at any position 1-8 of azulene cycle, and any two groups among R5, R6 and R7 can form benzene cycle in common with adjacent carbon atoms. Also, invention relates to a pharmaceutical composition based on these compounds and representing inhibitor of Na+-glucose co-transporter, and to a method for treatment of diabetes mellitus of type 1 (insulin dependent) and type 2 (non-insulin dependent).
