FIELD: rocketry and space engineering; manufacture of non-expendable rocket complexes which require no alienation of ground in zones of falling of used first stages.
SUBSTANCE: immediately after separation of first and second stages of rocket, first stage cruise and vernier engines are repeatedly switched-on and stage is turned in pitch plane. Then, stage is accelerated for return to cosmodrome over ballistic trajectory. After aerodynamic braking of stage by tail section, vernier engines are switched-on again at rated altitude and stage is brought to point of landing. Prior to touchdown, vertical velocity is decelerated to zero.
EFFECT: possibility of return of used stage to point of launching without use of additional landing units, catching systems and transport facilities.
