FIELD: surge protection for branched-off mains caused by load shorting and lightning discharges.

SUBSTANCE: proposed method for protection against voltage surges caused by load shorting and lightning discharges involves calculation of transient characteristics including active loss and nonlinearity of current distribution mains, connections and devices incorporated in no-break power supply system at different points of mains, evaluation of intervals complying with admissible surges using time-voltage curves, specification of parameters for choosing regular-protection circuit breakers such as instantaneous surges at different points of current-distribution mains during moments of disconnection of mains branches at points of their connection to common mains.

EFFECT: reduced surge level at load shorts and lightning discharges, enhanced reliability of power system in transients, reduced cable consumption and its laying cost, reduced noise level depending on inductance of cable laid between batteries and switchgear cabinet.
