FIELD: optoelectronics.
SUBSTANCE: optical modulator contains active element, input and output polarisers, control light source, and controlled light source. The active element consists of high-resistance crystal layer with n-type conductivity, two tunnel dielectrics, two optically transparent metallic electrodes, antireflection coating, and protection ring, which encircles the optically transparent metallic electrode and the antireflection coating. The active element electrode is connected to the negative contact of the power supply. The control light source radiation axis is perpendicular to the antireflection coating plane, and the controlled light source radiation axis is parallel to the normal to the crystal face with active element plane orientation.
EFFECT: development of optical modulator capable of generating pulses of any complex wave form, summing complex wave signals, and increasing optical modulation speed.
