SUBSTANCE: invention is intended for message exchange in wireless communication system, in particular for converting short messages between different formats used in various wireless communication systems, for example, in Global system for mobile communications (GSM) and in multiple access system with code division (CDMA). Method of converting short messages between different formats (for example, from SMS message of GSM standard into SMS message of CDMA standard) provides retention of essential control information without changing fundamental structure of these message formats. For the "Msg_Encoding" field in "User Data" subparameter of CDMA standard SMS message new value is set, indicating that this message content is encapsulated SMS message of GSM standard. "Message Type" field in "User Data" subparameter can be used to transmit information about data coding algorithm for encapsulated SMS message of GSM standard. Receiver mobile station checks values in "Msg_Encoding" field to determine weather CDMA standard SMS message contains encapsulated SMS message of GSM standard or not. If the answer is positive, the processing of subscriber data in "CHARi" fields of CDMA standard message is executed on the basis of information about data coding algorithm received from "Message_Type" field.
