SUBSTANCE: proposed is an invention for measuring the activity diagram of a communication medium in wireless networks and obtaining information about the wireless communication medium from the measured activity diagram. This invention is tripartite. First, it determines what to measure, including the standby/engaged diagrams of the communication medium, based on detection of power, standby/engaged diagram of the communication medium, based on preamble detection, and the standby/engaged diagram of the communication medium, based on virtual probing. Secondly, the invention provides for a mechanism of signalling request and measurement, as illustrated for the case of the IEEE 802.11 standard. Finally, the invention defines information which can be received, giving these measurements as detection of: devices not compliant with the 802 standard, 802.11e system standards, priorities for accessing communication medium based on concurrence of the 802.11e standard, use of controlled access to 802.11e standard communication medium, presence of 802.11b/g standards and hidden stations.
EFFECT: improved characteristics of IEEE 802,11 standard networks.
