FIELD: protection equipment.

SUBSTANCE: optical detector for use in a banknote identification device for detecting a foreign object or banknote in a channel, made in the said banknote identification device, in which the banknote moves through the said channel. The said optical detector has a mounting plate, light-emitting diode device, mounted on the said mounting plate and situated on one side of the said channel, a light reflector situated on the other side of the said channel, for receiving and reflecting light from the said light-emitting diode device and transmission through the said channel, and a photodetector, mounted on the said mounting plate for receiving light, reflected from the said reflector, so as to generate an electric signal at a level which corresponds to the amount of received light. The light-emitting diode device has a first terminal, which has a substrate, second terminal which has a connection zone; the light-emitting diode crystal, mounted on the said substrate and electrically connected to the said substrate and connection zone; and a light-transparent plastic case for sealing the said substrate, light-emitting diode crystal and connection zone. The plastic case has an integrated cylindrical lens, located opposite the said light-emitting diode crystal such that, light emitted by the crystal, through the said cylindrical lens, propagates outside the plastic case with a large angular range of directivity in the vertical direction of the radiation compared to the horizontal direction of the light in the channel.
