SUBSTANCE: after Crile's operation, internal and external carotid arteries are medially diverted, and the posterior belly of the digastric muscle, stylohyoid muscle and hypoglossal nerve are raised. The superior laryngeal nerve and upper neck sympathetic ganglia are traced. Retropharyngeal cellular tissue is found, in which enlarged, dense lymph nodes are palpated. Retropharyngeal lymph nodes with metastases and surrounding retropharyngeal cellular tissue are separated in one unit and removed.
EFFECT: efficient operation when removing metastases of retropharyngeal lymph nodes.
