FIELD: chemistry.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to obtaining new 4-(4-[N-ethyl-2-hydroxyethylamino]-phenylazo)-phthalonitrile for making polymers with nonlinear optical properties, with high second-harmonic generation coefficient and used as modulators of light beams, fibre optic switches, laser radiation harmonic generators for increasing recording capacity, photorefractive media for reversible hologram construction with diffraction efficiency close to 100%, etc. 4-(4-[N-ethyl-2-hydroxyethylamino]-phenylazo)-phthalonitrile has the following general structural formula: where R = -C2H5. Polymers with nonlinear optical properties, containing such a 4-phenylazophthalonitrile fragment, are chosen from a group comprising: polyimides with characteristic viscosity of 0.3-1.2 dl/g with general formula (I), (II) and (III), as well as polyurethane with characteristic viscosity of 0.20-0.27 dl/g, copolyimidourethanes with characteristic viscosity of 0.25-0.37 dl/g and copolymethacrylates with characteristic viscosity of 0.21-0.53 dl/g, expressed in specified general structural formulae.

EFFECT: polymers have better solubility and improved quality of the formed polymer coating, higher values of nonlinear optical properties.
