FIELD: physics.

SUBSTANCE: surface of an oil painting whose pigment contains zinc white is exposed to pulses of laser radiation with wavelength in the infrared range and intensity of the laser radiation passing through the analysed surface of the painting is measured. Qualitative composition of the zinc white of the paint layer having characteristic absorption bands is determined. The approximate age of the painting is determined from the statistical data of the results of analysing correlation dependencies between intensity of the absorption bands of functional groups and the age of standard samples of the composition of zinc white groups. Data of the standard samples and data of spectral analysis of the painting in the range of several characteristic absorption bands are compared. If data of correlation dependencies of different functional groups coincide, a more accurate age of the painting is established.

EFFECT: invention increases accuracy of determining age of oil paintings.
