FIELD: physics, computer engineering.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a system designed for updating a portable communication device from a multimedia data file server. The device automatically requests multimedia data file update in file storage device based on detection of processing a certain number of multimedia data files and types of possible wireless connections between the device and the server. During update, the device deletes old multimedia data files, determines the extent of update based on memory space available in the file storage device, requests sending new multimedia data files from the server to the device, receives new multimedia data files which replace the deleted multimedia data files and stores the said files in the file storage device. The server has a multimedia data file archive and an archive management unit which receives requests for sending files, selects new multimedia data files which are saved in the update volume and sends them to the device.

EFFECT: update of a portable communication device, which enables the user to access a large number of multimedia data files without need for actual sending of the files.
