FIELD: chemistry.

SUBSTANCE: method is based on detecting benzene using a sensor whose surface is modified with tert-butylthiacalix[4]arene which is tetra-substituted with ester groups on the bottom ring. This calixarene bonds benzene pairs in two steps contrary to pairs of other substances for which bonding takes place in a single step. The time difference for appearance of sensor response steps is related to content of benzene in the analysed mixture.

EFFECT: possibility of unambiguous detection of benzene in different media and determination of its quantitative content in mixtures with other substances, even with unknown qualitative composition of the mixture.
