FIELD: physics.

SUBSTANCE: magnetic separation method involves supply of pulp into the zone of inhomogeneous magnetic field and outlet of the separation products. Pulp is separated into three streams in a single cycle. Strong magnetic particles are extracted into the first stream by exposing the pulp to a weak magnetic field through an air gap between the pulp and a conveyor belt which tapers along the direction of motion of the pulp. Weak magnetic particles are extracted into the second stream through exposure to a strong magnetic field through an air gap which tapers along the direction of motion of the pulp until it touches the conveyor belt at the end of the magnetic effect zone. Sludge is extracted into the third stream. The conveyor belt rotates in the opposite direction of the stream of pulp. The magnetic separation device has a magnetic system composed of permanent magnets, a conveyor belt stretched over driving and idling drums, a feeder and containers for separation products. The magnetic system is divided by a support-guide roller into parts. The conveyor belt is fitted with bending over the support-guide roller and with an air gap from the feeder, where the said air gap has varying height which falls towards the idling drum.
