SUBSTANCE: device has an assembly of sensors consisting of several blocks of magnetic sensors, first and second compensating blocks of magnetic sensors, a signal processing assembly connected to outputs of magnetic sensors and a detector. The blocks of magnetic sensors are made in at least two pairs. Blocks of sensors in each pair have opposite sensitivity directions. The first compensating block of magnetic sensors has sensitivity direction which is perpendicular to the direction of several blocks of magnetic sensors. The second compensating block of magnetic sensors has sensitivity direction which is perpendicular to the direction of several blocks of magnetic sensors and the first compensating block of sensors. The signal processing assembly has a coupler which can combine output signals of sensors into a composite signal. The detector can determine position of material based on the composite signal. The method involves generation of several sensor signals from magnetic markers of packaging material, combination of sensor signals into a composite signal and determination of position based on the composite signal, particularly when it passes through zero.
