FIELD: chemistry.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to chemistry and is used in producing hydrogen. Water is decomposed by aluminium in an alkali-gallate solution containing 5-60 g/dm3 sodium hydroxide and 1-10 g/dm3 gallate in the presence of liquid gallium metal or a liquid alloy of gallium and tin and/or indium when brought directly into contact with aluminium. The reactor has a housing 1 which is divided into two chambers 2 and 3. The upper chamber 2 has a water inlet and its bottom is fitted with a conical tube lying inside the second chamber 3. The reactor also has a device for holding aluminium 19 which is in form of a side pocket and is fitted with a protective screen 7, at the bottom of which there is liquid gallium or liquid alloy of gallium and tin and/or indium, a heat exchanger 12 outside the reactor, a sensor 16 for monitoring the level of the solution in the upper chamber, a hydrocyclone for separating the clarified portion of the solution from the pulp accumulating at the bottom of the reactor, and a row of nozzles 6 which guide jets of the clarified solution onto the aluminium.

EFFECT: invention increases hydrogen output.
