FIELD: chemistry.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method of making an optical fibre workpiece. The method of making an optical fibre workpiece involves formation of a deposition section on a glass rod, where the said section consists of small glass particles, and suspension of the section with deposited small glass particles vertically inside a heating furnace in order to heat the section with the deposited small glass particles so as to increase transparency of the deposition section. The method also involves formation of an opaque section where the section of the glass rod undergoes sublimation and adheres to at least an area which is nearer to one end of the glass rod than that area of the glass rod where the deposition section is formed before the said heating, and formation of the deposition section through deposition of small glass particles on the glass rod. Transparency of the deposition section is increased by heating the section with deposited small glass particles under conditions where the nearest end of the glass rod where the opaque section is held and the section with deposited small glass particles is suspended vertically inside the heating furnace.

EFFECT: increase in transparency of the deposition section up to its top end and prevention of deformation of the glass rod when making a large workpiece.
