FIELD: optics.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to production of single-mode optical fibers from bromine-doped quartz glass. Optical fiber comprises a core and a cladding, said core comprising quartz glass doped with Br, wherein concentration of Br in the core of quartz glass ranges from 1.75 wt % to 4 wt %. Said shell can also contain bromine. Additionally optical fiber may contain chlorine. said shell includes an inner shell and an outer shell, wherein said inner shell has a lower relative refractive index than said outer shell, and said outer shell has a lower relative refractive index than said core. Alloying with bromine is achieved using SiBr4 as a precursor. Alloying with bromine can take place during heating, consolidation or sintering of porous body from quartz glass.
EFFECT: bromine is an impurity to increase the refraction index in quartz and the relative refractive index of quartz increases almost linearly with alloying concentration.
