FIELD: information technology.
SUBSTANCE: in the invention an application program receives a selection of a chart object in an electronic document and a document theme which includes a combination of formatting schemes, including colour, font, and style matrix. The selected document theme is automatically applied to the selected chart object in the electronic document. A number of attributes of the chart object which include colour, font, line, effect, and fill are automatically updated. A user can then modify a selected chart style in the document theme by modifying elements related to the selected chart style and save the chart type in the file. When a user opens the file, the chart application automatically updates the existing chart template gallery to include the custom chart template.
EFFECT: provision for tools for editing and modifying formatted charts.
