FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: gas ionisation method is based on formation of non-steady breakdown between needle electrodes when pulsed high voltage is applied across the said electrodes. A sustained non-steady avalanche (spark) breakdown forms in the inter-electrode zone due to that the energy of each voltage pulse applied to the needle electrodes is greater than the minimum breakdown energy of the ionised gas. Simultaneously, in order to prevent ion recombination, the breakdown zone is blown at a rate equal to f·d, where f is pulse recurrence frequency, d is distance between electrodes.
EFFECT: high ionisation efficiency.
