FIELD: physics.
SUBSTANCE: first ultrasonic signal (10) is transmitted to a rail head (1) through the top (T) of the head and propagates on such a propagation path (9) that the signal (10) is reflected only once from the bottom (B) of the rail head and not from the lateral side (S) of the rail head. The signal (10) primarily reaches one central part (C) of the rail head and comes out of the rail head through the top (T). The propagation path (9) of at least the first signal (10) passes in effective propagation plane, whereby the propagation plane is essentially perpendicular to the longitudinal direction (L) of the rail, after which ultrasonic signals coming from the top (T) of the rail head are picked up.
EFFECT: more reliable and accurate detection of defects in the rail head.
