FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to synthesis of pure hydroxides of quaternary onium salts through extraction from solutions which contain onium compounds, electrochemical ion exchange with subsequent collection of the catholyte. The process is carried out in an electrolysis cell whose inner volume is divided by a cation-exchange membrane. The cathode space of the cell is filled with 2-10% solution of the hydroxide of the initial salt, and the anode space is filled with a solution of the initial salt which is purified to concentration of the initial anion of not more than 0.01 mol/l. Electrolysis is carried out with voltage 0.5-2.5 V and current density 0.5-2.5 A/dm2. The solution of the initial salt is purified by passing the latter with concentration of 0.4 mol/l at room temperature through an anion exchanger with dynamic exchange with volume of not less than 1000 mol/m3.
EFFECT: reduced operational expenses owing to longer service life of the ion exchange membrane and structural components of the electrolysis cell, low concentration of halogen in the product.
