FIELD: physics.

SUBSTANCE: disclosed method and system can measure or receive characteristic data from a process control device such as a valve, an analyse said data with respect to user-configured boundaries and settings in order to determine whether there is a problem in the functioning of the control device. In order to assist the user in configuring boundary parametres and selecting settings, one or more characteristic curves plotted from measurement results in a prior period can be provided for the user. The disclosed method and system enable to assess characteristic curve relative user-configured boundaries in order to determine, among other characteristics, whether the maximum or minimum threshold of friction or torque has been exceeded, whether the piston of the drive component or valve has been broken and whether there are any cases of sticking/sliding within given allowable limits.

EFFECT: providing computerised diagnostic tests with automatic detection and identification of defects in process control devices.
