FIELD: physics.
SUBSTANCE: content of chemical elements of the family of rare earths, consisting of 14 closely related lanthanide elements, is measured. A matrix of changes in content of rare earths with burial depth is compiled and gradients thereof are calculated. Depth limit at which equilibrium is achieved in the system of the family of rare earths between light and heavy elements is determined from gradients of increase in content of separate elements. Said depth corresponds to depth of origin of parent magma in the Earth's mantle, associated with formation of diamond-bearing volcanic pipes.
EFFECT: high reliability of determining depth of formation of diamond-bearing volcanic pipes.
