FIELD: physics.
SUBSTANCE: invention describes obtaining a digital version of amplitude and phase of a received optical signal by employing direct differential detection and digital signal processing. The signal is split into three copies. An intensity profile is obtained using one of the copies. Phases are obtained by supplying each copy to a respective optical delay interferometer having orthogonal phase offsets, followed by balanced intensity detectors. The output signal of each of the balanced intensity detectors and the intensity profile are converted to digital representations. Signal processing is used to obtain phase information from the digital representations of the output signals of the balanced intensity detectors.
EFFECT: high accuracy of processing an optical signal.
