SUBSTANCE: described is a general encoder which encodes an input signal (for example an audio signal) based on at least one detector and several encoders. At least one detector can include a signal activity detector, a pseudonoise signal detector, a sparsity detector, any other detector or combination thereof. Several encoders may include a silence encoder, a pseudonoise signal encoder, a time domain encoder, a transform domain encoder, any other encoder or combination thereof. Characteristics of the input signal can be determined based on at least one detector. The encoder can be selected from a number of detectors based on characteristics of the input signal. The input signal can be encoded based on the selected encoder. The input signal can include a frame sequence and detection and encoding can be performed for each frame.
