FIELD: metallurgy.
SUBSTANCE: by means of a tip provided with a diamond from Rockwell hardness-testing machine there formed is scratch on metal surface; at that, the applied force for movement of the tip is measured considering tangential component of friction force at formation of scratch. Scratch of constant depth of 0.2 mm is formed, at constant speed of 4 mm/sec, and 10-20 mm long along force field in three sections for statistics of the results. Forces for formation of scratches are measured and average force value for movement of the cutter along all sections is determined. In each section the cutter is returned to initial position and moved along the same scratch for the second time; at the same time, friction force is measured and average value of this force is determined; as per these conditions average value of metal ultimate shear strength is determined, as per which metal ultimate strength is determined.
EFFECT: improving accuracy and enlarging the application scope of the method for determining metal hardness by scratching method immediately on the structure; automated monitoring of force on formation of scratch on metal surface and continuous recording of test results in the form of metal cutting force at formation of a scratch with indenter.
