FIELD: information technology.

SUBSTANCE: portable storage device, which automatically selects the connection protocol for communication with a host computer, includes a physical layer interface, a module for detecting protocol failure, a connection and disconnection emulator, a device for detecting inserts and extraction and an internal control logic. The internal control logic coordinates detection of device connection with the target host computer and attempts at the first protocol for connection with the target host computer. The logic also provides logic disconnection and reconnection with the target host computer if the device for detecting protocol failure indicates that there is failure in the first protocol, and the provides an attempt at using the second protocol to connect with the target host computer. In case of success, the device sets up a success indicator in order to register the protocol which was eventually successful for connection with the target host computer.

EFFECT: high reliability owing to efficient protocol selection.
