FIELD: information technologies.

SUBSTANCE: at first a primary download image is received, which includes sufficient functionality of an operating system to support the main operation in a network. After the primary download image has been received, the primary download image is loaded either by means of downloading or from a device storage in order to start operation in the network. After operation in the network has been activated, the process of device initial downloading is suspended, and one or more secondary images of the operating system are downloaded with the device. These images are coupled with the primary downloading image thus developing a single operating system capable of coupling. These secondary images of the operating system are subsequently loaded at stages, where each subsequent stage is built on functionality of a previous stage.

EFFECT: expansion of functional capabilities of initial download of an operating system due to staged performance of initial download of an operating system.
