FIELD: physics.

SUBSTANCE: light pulses are transmitted into a non-homogeneous atmosphere from points spaced apart in space on intersecting probing lines passing in at least three noncollinear direction, with formation of a probing region by sections between intersection points thereof, and echo signals are received at the transmission points. Atmospheric pollution characteristics are determined from the power values of said signals using calculation formulas, and light pulses are transmitted into the atmosphere along additional lines with formation of additional probing regions, having lines which are common with lines of the first region, and scattering volumes therein, spaced apart by a distance not shorter than the spatial extent of the probing light pulse; echo signals are accumulated on sections which form regions; atmospheric pollution characteristics are determined from the echo signals received and accumulated taking or without taking into account atmospheric pollution characteristics of additional probing regions, and atmospheric characteristics are determined at the given level of coincidence of two successively obtained results.

EFFECT: high accuracy of determination due to correct accounting for influencing factors.
