FIELD: physics.
SUBSTANCE: method involves sending light pulses into the inhomogeneous atmosphere from points spaced apart in space on paths which cross at a given point and on additional paths which cross said paths to form probing regions bounded by sections between their intersection points; receiving signals scattered backwards; determining characteristics of the inhomogeneous atmosphere from the power of signals which are received and accumulated, using calculation formulae; reducing the probing regions and repeating the measurement procedure to the given level of coincidence of two successive results of determining characteristics of the atmosphere; wherein light pulses are sent on additional paths successively at inclination angles which are less than or greater than the angle of inclination of the additional path passing through the given point at which characteristics of the atmosphere are determined.
EFFECT: high accuracy of determination due to correct accounting for considerable atmospheric inhomogeneity.
