FIELD: physics.
SUBSTANCE: method comprises transmitting short-duration light pulses into the inhomogeneous atmosphere; receiving echo signals; correcting the echo signals by the lidar geometric factor; accumulating the corrected signals for a given period of time; wherein the light pulses are transmitted from not less than two points in space on probing paths which cross a given region of the atmosphere; deviating the transmitted pulses at given points of the probing path in the reverse direction; measuring the echo signals of the pulses before and after deviation at the same points of the probing path, including the points of intersection of the probing path with the given region of the atmosphere; determining characteristics of the inhomogeneous atmosphere based on the received, corrected and accumulated echo signals before and after deviation of the light pulses.
EFFECT: high accuracy of determining the attenuation coefficient of the atmosphere.
