SUBSTANCE: image data is received in a comparison module, which relates an image characteristic with an attribute of a display model, which is a maximum value of an output signal of an ideal display, received image data is analysed to determine the image characteristic from the received image data, the attribute of the display model is defined, which is related to the specified received image data from the specified defined image characteristic, the display model is generated, based on the specified defined attribute of the display model, the index of image display quality is calculated for multiple levels of light source illumination, using the specified generated display model and the specified received image data, and the light source illumination level is selected, based on the specified calculated index of the image display quality.
EFFECT: controlling variation of a brightness modulation level for pixels modulated with the help of a light valve, to compensate for lower intensity of light source illumination and to improve image quality at the fixed level of the light source illumination.
