FIELD: physics.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to projection display systems having an enhanced dynamic range (EDR) functionality. Disclosed projection display system comprises: a light source; controller; a light regulator and a first modulator. Said light regulator is controlled by a controller to control the amount of light from the light source, and said first modulator is illuminated with light from said light regulator and is capable of modulating light from said light controller under control from a controller. Said controller further comprises: a processor and memory which is connected to said processor and further comprises processor-readable instructions such that when said processor reads instructions read by the processor, they cause the processor to perform the following steps: receiving image data; processing image data to determine global light modulation settings and an optimum dynamic range window; displaying image data in an optimum window of the dynamic range; sending control signals to said light regulator so that the light regulator can select a portion of light from said light source to said first modulator, wherein the portion is based on the optimum dynamic range window; and sending control signals to said first modulator such that said portion of light from said light source is modulated to form a screen image.

EFFECT: technical result is creation of projection systems having the possibility of projecting images with an expanded dynamic range.
