FIELD: physics.
SUBSTANCE: coefficient of external friction between two samples with flat working surfaces lying one on the other is determined. The working surfaces can be inclined by a variable angle φ, linked to the coefficient of external friction by the expression m=tgφ. The bottom sample can rotate about an axis perpendicular to the working surface. The bottom sample is rotated. The centre of the working surface of the top sample is placed on the radius line of the bottom sample. Linear velocity of points of the bottom sample coinciding with the radius line is directed upwards on a slope. The top sample cannot be displaced in the direction of rotation and the slope of the working surfaces is increased until the top sample begins to slide in the direction opposite the rotation of the bottom sample. At that moment, the angle of inclination φ is measured and the coefficient of external friction is determined.
EFFECT: possibility of determining dynamic coefficient of external friction without measuring the value of the frictional force.
