FIELD: physics.
SUBSTANCE: multi-reflecting time-of-flight mass-analyser has two parallel gridless ion mirrors, each having an elongated structure in the direction (Z) of drift. These ion mirrors provide a convoluted ion path formed by multiple reflections of ions in the direction (X) of flight, orthogonal to the direction (Z) of drift. The analyser also has an additional gridless ion mirror for reflecting ions in the direction (Z) of drift. During operation, ions are spatially separated according to the mass-to-charge ratio due to different time of flight along the convoluted ion path and ions having essentially the same mass-to-charge ratio are subject to energy focusing with respect to the direction of flight and drift.
EFFECT: wider mass range.
