FIELD: chemistry.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to production of radioactive metals, particularly a method of producing thorium 228 from a natural thorium salt and can be used in nuclear medicine. Method of producing thorium 228 from a natural thorium salt containing thorium 232 and thorium 232 decay products, containing radium 228 and radium 224, involves: a) separation of radium 228 and radium 224 from thorium 232 and radioactive decay products thereof by at least one coprecipitation of radium 228 and radium 224 using barium sulphate. The coprecipitation involves: i) adding sulphuric acid and a barium salt to an aqueous solution of said natural thorium salt to form a barium-(radium 228 and radium 224) sulphate coprecipitate and ii) separating the coprecipitate from the medium in which it has formed, extracting the thorium 228 formed from radioactive decay of radium 228 from the coprecipitate thus separated, and optional purification and concentration of the thorium 228 thus extracted. Thorium 228 obtained using the disclosed method is used in the manufacture of radiopharmaceutical products for nuclear medicine.

EFFECT: obtained thorium 228 has high purity.
