FIELD: radionuclide-containing material treatment. SUBSTANCE: water slurry is prepared from magnesium slag and treated with carbon dioxide to transfer magnesium compounds into water solution. Then solid radioactive wastes are separated from water solution by filtration; volume of radioactive solid wastes is reduced and sent for storage. Volume of wastes is usually reduced by compression and/or heating to 50-90%. Slurry is usually treated by carbon dioxide at pressure of 450 to 3400 kPa and temperature of 4 to 35 C. Barium sulfate is introduced into water solution upon its filtration so as to extract more radionuclides from it; sediment formed in the process is separated and sent for storage. EFFECT: reduced volume of radioactive wastes due to selective thorium concentration from thorium-containing magnesium alloy. 23 cl, 1 dwg
