FIELD: physics.
SUBSTANCE: linear dimensions are measured in the cross-sectional plane; the curvilinear cross-sectional surface is broken into sectors with varying radii; a reference point is selected in the cross-sectional plane. The reference point is selected at a depth of 1.2-1.5 m from the soil and at a distance of 2-5 m from one of the excavation boards, wherein a device for measuring angles and distance is placed in a plane perpendicular to the axis of the excavation. Additionally, the cross-sectional area with linear contours is broken into triangles, the distance from the reference point to the vertices of triangles of the linear contour of the cross-section and angles of the triangles from the reference point are measured with varying increment from 20°-120°, and the cross-sectional area of the excavation is calculated using a given relationship.
EFFECT: reduced labour input in fixing points on the contour of a large volume excavation and high accuracy of determining the cross-sectional area of the large volume excavation.
